The exam

Understanding the Digital SAT

The SAT is College Board’s admission test, used by universities in the United States and many others worldwide, and accepted by some Pakistani universities, including LUMS for many programmes. It is now fully digital and taken on the Bluebook app at a test centre.

There are two sections: Reading and Writing (54 questions in 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions in 70 minutes). Each section has two modules, and the second module adapts to how the student did on the first. A calculator is allowed throughout Math, and Bluebook includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator. Scores range from 400 to 1600.

There is no essay and there are no SAT Subject Tests any more; both were discontinued. Preparation should follow the current digital format, not older paper-based books.

Roots provides private preparation tutoring in Lahore. We are not affiliated with the examining body and do not conduct the official test.

SAT Math

SAT Mathematics Tutoring

SAT Math covers four domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Most of the content will be familiar to A Level and IB students; marks are lost to wording, rushed reading and not using the tools well.

Your tutor teaches when to solve algebraically and when Desmos is faster, how to read a word problem for the actual question, and how to check an answer in seconds. Practice moves from single-domain sets to mixed, adaptive-style sets.

  • Choosing algebra vs. Desmos
  • Word problems and units
  • Data tables and scatterplots
  • Geometry and trigonometry essentials

Reading and Writing

SAT Reading and Writing Tutoring

Every Reading and Writing question comes with its own short passage. The section tests four skill areas: Information and Ideas (understanding and evidence), Craft and Structure (vocabulary in context, purpose, structure), Expression of Ideas (transitions and rhetorical goals) and Standard English Conventions (grammar and punctuation).

Tutors teach a quick, repeatable method for each question type, then build speed. Grammar rules are learned as a short, finite list, which often lifts the score faster than reading practice alone.

Diagnostic

Starting With a Diagnostic Assessment

Preparation begins with a timed diagnostic, ideally a full-length practice test in Bluebook. It shows where the student stands in each section and, more usefully, which question types cost the most marks.

The diagnostic turns into a priority list. Instead of working through a whole book, the tutor spends time where each hour gives the most improvement.

What the diagnostic tells you

  • Starting point in each section
  • Weakest Math domains
  • Reading and Writing question types to fix
  • Timing and pacing problems
  • A realistic preparation length

Plans

Individual SAT Preparation Plans

The right plan length depends on the starting point, the time before the test and other school commitments. These are common shapes; your tutor will recommend one after the diagnostic.

PlanSuitsFocus
6 weeksStudents close to their goal, or a retakeTargeted weak areas and timed practice
8 weeksMost first-time test takersBoth sections, then full-length practice
12 weeksBusy A Level or IB terms, or a bigger gapSteady foundation work, then timed practice

Practice

Timed Practice and Mistake Analysis

Because the second module adapts, accuracy in the first module matters. Tutors train students to move steadily, avoid careless errors early, and keep a per-question time budget.

Every practice test is followed by a review: each mistake is labelled as a content gap, a misread or a timing issue, and the next week’s lessons are planned from that list. We cannot promise a particular score increase; we can make sure practice is aimed at the right problems.

Example plan

How an 8-Week SAT Plan Usually Runs

A typical structure for a first-time test taker. Shorter and longer plans follow the same steps at a different pace.

  1. Week 1

    Diagnostic

Full practice test in Bluebook; priorities set.

  2. Weeks 2–3

    Math domains

Weakest Math domains, plus Desmos skills.

  3. Weeks 4–5

    Reading & Writing

    Question-type methods and grammar rules.

  4. Weeks 6–7

    Full tests

Timed practice tests with detailed review.

  5. Week 8

    Final prep

Error-log drills, pacing and test-day routine.

Your tutor adjusts the order and length to your diagnostic and school timetable.

Ways to prepare

SAT Preparation Options

  • Full SAT preparation

Both sections, from diagnostic to test day.

  • Math-only tutoring

For students who want to raise their Math score.

  • Reading and Writing only

    Passage strategy, vocabulary and grammar.

  • Retake programme

Focused work on the areas that held the last score back.

Tutor matching

Tutors With Relevant SAT Teaching Experience

We match SAT tutors by section strength and experience teaching the digital format, plus your area and timings. Many students take one tutor for Math and another for Reading and Writing; others prefer one tutor for both.

Male and female tutors are available on request, subject to availability. Before choosing, ask the tutor how they would use your diagnostic, and use the first two sessions as a free trial for eligible placements.

Discuss before choosing a tutor

  • Your test date and target universities
  • Diagnostic or previous SAT score
  • Weaker section
  • School curriculum (A Level, IB, other)
  • One tutor or one per section
  • Preferred tutor gender and timings
