The exam

What Is the LCAT?

The LCAT (LUMS Common Admission Test) is the admission test LUMS offers to undergraduate applicants. LUMS describes it as a multiple-choice test similar in style to the SAT, covering English and Mathematics, and lasting about three hours. Its result sits alongside your academic record in the admission decision.

For many LUMS programmes, applicants can submit either the LCAT or an accepted international test such as the SAT. That choice depends on the programme and the admission cycle, so we check which options your target school accepts before planning preparation.

LUMS publishes sample LCAT questions on its admissions site. They are the best guide to the question style, and your tutor uses them to explain what each section expects. We do not reproduce or sell LUMS materials.

Roots provides private preparation tutoring in Lahore. We are not affiliated with the examining body and do not conduct the official test.

Who it’s for

Who Should Consider LCAT Preparation?

  1. FSc and ICS students

Strong board marks but little practice with SAT-style reasoning questions.

  2. A Level and IB students

Choosing between the LCAT and SAT, or preparing for the LCAT alongside final exams.

  3. Maths is the weak section

Students who need algebra, data and problem-solving under time limits.

  4. Reading speed is the issue

Students who understand passages but run out of time on English.

What your tutor teaches

What Your LCAT Tutor Teaches

Preparation is split between the two areas LUMS tests, with the balance set by your diagnostic.

  • Mathematics

Reasoning with numbers, not just calculation.

    • Algebra and equations
    • Ratios, percentages and rates
    • Geometry and basic trigonometry
    • Data interpretation
    • Word problems
  • English reading

    Reading accurately at speed.

    • Main idea and inference
    • Vocabulary in context
    • Passage structure
    • Evidence-based answers
  • Writing and verbal reasoning

    Language accuracy in MCQ form.

    • Grammar and usage
    • Sentence correction
    • Word choice and tone
    • Logical connections

Mathematics

LCAT Mathematics: Problem-Solving Under Time Pressure

LCAT Mathematics is less about advanced syllabus content and more about using familiar ideas well: setting up an equation from words, spotting the faster route, and avoiding careless slips. Students from FSc often know more Mathematics than they need but are slow; A Level students may be quick but miss question traps.

Your tutor starts with the question types you get wrong, explains the reasoning behind each, and then drills timed sets. Mental arithmetic and estimation get regular practice, so the student is ready whatever the calculator rule for the cycle.

  • Translating word problems into equations
  • Ratio, percentage and rate shortcuts
  • Reading tables and graphs
  • Checking answers by estimation

English

English Reading, Writing and Verbal Reasoning

The English section rewards careful reading under time limits. Common problems are reading too slowly, choosing an answer that sounds right but isn’t supported by the passage, and missing grammar rules that only show up in context.

Tutors teach a repeatable approach to passages (what the author claims, how the passage is built, what the question is really asking) and work through grammar and usage in short, focused drills. Students keep an error log so the same mistake doesn’t cost marks twice.

Practice

Timed Practice and Error Analysis

Practice only helps if mistakes are understood. After every timed set, the tutor and student sort errors into three groups: didn’t know the concept, misread the question, or ran out of time. Each group needs a different fix.

As the test approaches, practice moves to full-length timed papers, so the student learns to keep focus and pace across about three hours.

Every mistake gets sorted

  • Concept gap: reteach the idea, then practise it
  • Misreading: slow down on key words, underline the ask
  • Time: set a per-question budget and skip strategy

LCAT or SAT?

SAT vs LCAT: Preparation Considerations

The LCAT and the SAT cover similar ground, but they are not interchangeable everywhere. Each has its own format, timing and test dates, and LUMS sets which tests each programme accepts for each cycle.

Students applying only to LUMS often find the LCAT the simpler route. Students also applying abroad may prefer the SAT, which many international universities accept. Your tutor can help you compare, but the final choice should follow your target programmes’ published requirements.

Example plan

A Personalised 6–10-Week LCAT Approach

Most students prepare over six to ten weeks. The plan below shows the shape; your tutor sets the length and balance after the diagnostic.

  1. Week 1

    Diagnostic

Timed sample questions in both sections; weak question types identified.

  2. Weeks 2–4

    Core skills

Mathematics reasoning and reading strategy, one weak area at a time.

  3. Weeks 5–7

    Timed sets

Mixed practice under time limits, with the error log reviewed weekly.

  4. Weeks 8–9

    Full papers

Full-length timed practice to build pacing and stamina.

  5. Final week

    Polish

Repeated-mistake drills, test-day routine and rest.

A six-week plan compresses the core-skills phase; a ten-week plan gives more time to weak areas. No plan can promise a particular score.

Tutor Qualifications and Selection

Male and female tutors are available on request, subject to availability. You can discuss the plan with the tutor before committing, and the first two sessions are a free trial for eligible placements.

Discuss before choosing a tutor

  • Which programme you are applying to
