Should Your Child Take O Level Additional Mathematics (4037)?

O Level Additional Mathematics 4037 guide for Lahore parents

Short answer: O Level Additional Mathematics (4037) is worth taking if your child is comfortable with O Level Maths and plans to study A Level Maths, Physics, engineering or economics. It is a poor fit for a student who is still struggling with the basics. This guide explains what the subject covers, how it is examined and how to decide.

What Is Additional Mathematics 4037?

Additional Mathematics is a separate Cambridge O Level subject that builds on O Level Mathematics (4024). Cambridge's syllabus states that knowledge of O Level or IGCSE Mathematics content is assumed, including indices and surds. In practice, students take it alongside 4024, usually across O1 and O2.

The current syllabus applies to exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027. It covers 14 topics:

Algebra and functionsGeometry and trigonometryFurther topics
Functions, quadratic functions, factors of polynomialsStraight-line graphs, coordinate geometry of the circlePermutations and combinations
Equations, inequalities and graphs, simultaneous equationsCircular measure, trigonometrySeries, vectors in two dimensions
Logarithmic and exponential functionsCalculus

Calculus is the topic most students have never seen before. It is also the one that matters most for A Level.

How Is It Examined?

There are two papers, each 2 hours long, worth 80 marks and 50% of the grade:

  • Paper 1: no calculator allowed.
  • Paper 2: a scientific calculator is required.

Grades run from A* to E. In Pakistan, exams are available in the May/June and October/November series.

The non-calculator paper is where many students lose marks. They can do the method, but slow arithmetic with surds, fractions and logarithms costs them time.

Who Should Take Additional Maths?

Add Maths makes sense when most of these are true:

  • Your child is scoring well in 4024 without heavy support.
  • They plan to take A Level Maths, Further Maths or Physics.
  • They are aiming for engineering, computer science, economics or actuarial courses.
  • Their subject load leaves room for one more demanding paper.

Cambridge notes that students with grades A* to C in 4037 are well prepared for AS & A Level Mathematics. The jump to A Level Maths 9709 is much smaller for students who have already met calculus and logarithms.

When to Skip It

Additional Maths is not a requirement, and taking it at the wrong time can pull down two grades instead of one. Think carefully if:

  • Your child is below a B in 4024.
  • Their timetable is already full of science subjects.
  • They are heading for medicine, law or humanities, where it adds little.

A strong grade in O Level Maths is worth more than a weak grade in both.

What It Means for IBCC Equivalence

For Matric equivalence, IBCC requires eight O Level subjects. These include the compulsory English, Mathematics, Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies, plus three electives at grade E or above.

Additional Maths can count as one of those electives. According to IBCC, a student receives Science group equivalence at SSC level if they studied Additional Mathematics in place of Biology or Computer Science. Check the latest rules on the IBCC website before finalising subject choices, because requirements can change.

Where Students Struggle

These are the topics that cause the most trouble:

  1. Functions: composite and inverse functions feel abstract at first.
  2. Logarithms and exponentials: small rule mistakes spread through a whole question.
  3. Trigonometric identities: proving them needs a set method, not guesswork.
  4. Calculus: differentiation and integration arrive late, often with little practice time.

Most of these problems trace back to weak algebra. Fixing rearranging, fractions and indices first makes every later topic easier.

How to Prepare for a May/June Exam

  • September to December: finish the syllabus and repair weak algebra.
  • January to March: topic-wise past papers, then full timed papers for both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
  • April to May: non-calculator speed practice and mark scheme review.

Use Cambridge past papers and mark schemes for your exam series, and practise Paper 1 without a calculator from the start. Our Cambridge mock exam guide covers how to use mocks well.

When a Maths Tutor Helps

Schools often teach Add Maths quickly, alongside 4024, with limited time for questions. A one-to-one tutor can slow down where your child is stuck, especially on functions and calculus.

Roots Home Tutors matches families with verified Maths home tutors in Lahore for O Level, IGCSE, A Level, Matric and FSc. Our Maths tutors include Muhammad Anns Ikhwan, who holds a Master's in Mathematics and has 7 years of experience teaching O Level Maths. You can also browse our O Level home tutors, use our trial-class checklist, and your first two sessions are a free trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Additional Maths harder than O Level Maths?

Yes. It assumes the 4024 content and adds functions, logarithms, series and calculus, which are closer to AS Level Maths.

Can my child take 4037 and IGCSE 0606 together?

No. Cambridge does not allow 4037 to be taken alongside IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606).

Can my child start Add Maths in O2?

Yes, but they will need extra support to finish 14 topics in one year. Starting in O1 is easier.
