Home Tutor Trial-Class Checklist for Lahore Parents
3 min readBy Roots Home Tutors

A useful home tutor trial shows whether the teacher understands your child’s curriculum, explains clearly and gives the student time to practise. Judge the lesson by what your child can attempt afterwards. A friendly conversation or a completed worksheet is not enough to confirm the right match.
For Lahore families, the trial should also test practical fit: arrival time, travel reliability and whether the proposed timetable works around school. Use the checklist below before committing to regular lessons.
Keep the trial focused on teaching rather than turning it into a long interview. Complete practical questions beforehand where possible. During the lesson, give the tutor room to work while remaining available. Afterwards, note one teaching strength, one unanswered question and the next agreed step. This creates a more useful record than a general impression that the tutor seemed friendly.
Prepare one clear learning task
Share the student’s grade, subject, examination board and current chapter before the visit. Provide a recent test, textbook and an example of a question the student finds difficult. For Cambridge subjects, confirm the syllabus code and examination year.
Choose one manageable objective. “Explain equivalent fractions and attempt three questions” is more useful than “improve Mathematics.” For O Level tuition, you might select one algebra method or a short structured Science question.
Agree the trial’s length, location and any charges beforehand. Ask who will attend and keep a parent or responsible adult available. Complete your tutor identity and qualification checks before the lesson.
Observe how the tutor teaches
- Preparation: Does the tutor know the requested subject, topic and level?
- Starting knowledge: Do they ask the student to explain or attempt something first?
- Explanation: Are unfamiliar steps explained in language the student understands?
- Adaptation: Do they try another example when the student remains confused?
- Participation: Does the student work, answer and ask questions?
- Feedback: Are mistakes corrected respectfully, with reasons?
- Independent practice: Can the student attempt a similar question without being led through every step?
- Professional conduct: Are time, household boundaries and communication handled appropriately?
A quiet student may need encouragement. Do not judge engagement only by how much they speak. Watch whether they follow the method and become willing to try.
Use a simple trial scorecard
Record a score from 1 to 5 and one observation for each area. Use 1 for a clear concern, 3 for mixed evidence and 5 for a strong demonstration. This is a parent discussion tool, not a validated assessment.
| Area | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Subject knowledge | Accurate explanations and answers |
| Curriculum fit | Appropriate material for the board and level |
| Explanation quality | A difficult step became understandable |
| Student participation | The child attempted work independently |
| Preparation and punctuality | Agreed materials and arrival time |
| Professional conduct | Respectful teaching and clear boundaries |
Do not let a high total cancel a serious conduct concern. Where evidence is missing, write “not observed” rather than guessing a score. Print this table or copy it into your notes.
Ask your child after the lesson
Speak privately and use open questions: “Which explanation helped?” “What still feels confusing?” “Could you ask questions comfortably?” Ask the student to demonstrate one small task from the lesson.
A useful response is more specific than “the teacher was nice.” Equally, demanding practice does not automatically mean poor teaching. Look for a combination of comfort, clear instruction and appropriate challenge.
Illustrative example: a Grade 7 student can copy a fraction calculation but cannot explain the denominator. Ask the tutor how the next lesson would address that gap. The response reveals more than the amount of written work produced.
Keep trial expectations realistic
One or two lessons cannot establish future grades, resolve every learning gap or prove long-term reliability. The trial gives initial evidence of fit. Continue checking attendance, understanding and practice after regular tuition starts.
Keep school homework separate from your assessment. Finishing an assignment together may be useful, but it does not show whether the student can solve a new question alone.
Confirm the arrangement before continuing
Agree subjects, days, lesson duration, monthly fee, payment timing, cancellations and parent updates. For a family in Johar Town, confirm the exact block and realistic travel time between lessons, not just whether the tutor “covers Lahore.”
Choose between continuing, clarifying concerns or requesting another match. Use our progress tracking guide once lessons begin. If concerns persist, read when to replace a home tutor.
