IGCSE Maths 0580 at a Glance (2025 to 2027)
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has a Core tier and an Extended tier. Each tier has a non-calculator and a calculator paper, and each paper is 50% of the grade.
| Paper | Tier | Type | Duration | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Core | Non-calculator | 1 hour 30 minutes | 80 |
| Paper 3 | Core | Calculator | 1 hour 30 minutes | 80 |
| Paper 2 | Extended | Non-calculator | 2 hours | 100 |
| Paper 4 | Extended | Calculator | 2 hours | 100 |
Core students cannot receive a grade above C. Papers changed in 2025 to include a dedicated non-calculator paper at each tier, so do not rely on older durations. Additional Mathematics 0606 is a separate Cambridge subject, and Edexcel 4MA1 is set as Foundation or Higher tier papers of its own; confirm both on the official pages.

Core or Extended: Which Route Is Your Child On?
Core students sit Papers 1 and 3 and can reach grade C at most; Extended students sit Papers 2 and 4 and can reach A* to E. The school makes the entry, but a tutor can show from past-paper scores which route is realistic.
| Route | Papers | Grades available | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Paper 1 and Paper 3 | C to G | Students who want a secure pass and are not planning A Level Maths |
| Extended | Paper 2 and Paper 4 | A* to E | Students planning A Level Maths, sciences or engineering |
Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) uses different tiers: Foundation (Papers 1F and 2F) and Higher (Papers 1H and 2H). Each paper is 2 hours and 100 marks and counts for 50%, so the tutor works from Edexcel past papers rather than Cambridge ones. Confirm the details on Pearson’s 4MA1 specification.
IGCSE Maths Topics Our Tutors Cover
The same nine areas run through 0580. Extended covers them in greater depth.
| Topic area | Core | Extended adds |
|---|---|---|
| Number | Fractions, percentages, ratio, standard form | Surds, bounds, recurring decimals, exponential growth |
| Algebra and graphs | Expressions, linear equations, simple graphs | Quadratics, inequalities, functions, calculus basics |
| Coordinate geometry | Gradient and equation of a line | Parallel and perpendicular lines, more complex lines |
| Geometry | Angles, symmetry, circle properties | Similarity, circle theorems in depth |
| Mensuration | Area, volume, arc and sector | Compound shapes, surface area of solids |
| Trigonometry | Right-angled triangles | Sine and cosine rules, 3D problems |
| Vectors and transformations | Basic vectors and transformations | Vector geometry and combined transformations |
| Probability | Simple probability | Tree diagrams and conditional probability |
| Statistics | Averages, charts, scatter graphs | Histograms and cumulative frequency |
Where Students Lose Marks in IGCSE Maths
These are the places 0580 and 4MA1 papers most often take marks from students who understand the topic.
| Where marks go | What usually causes it | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Graph sketching (Extended) | Plotting points without first finding intercepts and turning points, then joining them with straight segments | Find intercepts and stationary points, mark them, then draw one smooth curve |
| Reverse percentages (Core and Extended) | Taking the percentage of the new amount instead of dividing by the multiplier | Write the multiplier (for example 1.2) and divide the final amount by it |
| Showing working | A correct answer with no line of method earns less than a clearly set-out solution | Write each step down the page, one equals sign per line |
| The non-calculator paper | Slow, error-prone fractions and algebra that the calculator usually hides | Daily non-calculator practice on fractions, indices and expanding |
| Calculator settings | Degree and radian mode, or brackets missing around a denominator | Check mode before every paper and bracket every numerator and denominator |
| Wrong tier for the target grade | Core entry when the student wants a grade the tier cannot award | Settle the route with the school early; see the table above |
Cambridge 0580, Additional Maths 0606 or Edexcel 4MA1?
Tell us the exact code. 0580 is the standard Cambridge IGCSE; 0606 is Additional Mathematics for students who also take 0580; 4MA1 is Pearson Edexcel’s Mathematics A. Their papers, tiers and wording differ, so we match a tutor who has taught your specification. See also our Additional Maths 4037 tutors for the O Level version.
How We Teach IGCSE Maths
Lessons alternate between the topic in front of the student and a timed question from the right tier, marked against the mark scheme. Extended students spend extra time on algebraic proof, functions and calculus; Core students on percentage, ratio and statistics accuracy.
A worked example from Extended Paper 4
Find the coordinates of the stationary points of f(x) = x³ − 6x² + 9x and decide which is a maximum and which is a minimum.
f’(x) = 3x² − 12x + 9 = 3(x − 1)(x − 3), which is zero at x = 1 and x = 3. Then f(1) = 1 − 6 + 9 = 4 and f(3) = 27 − 54 + 27 = 0, so the stationary points are (1, 4) and (3, 0). The second derivative f’’(x) = 6x − 12 is −6 at x = 1, so (1, 4) is a maximum, and +6 at x = 3, so (3, 0) is a minimum. Most marks are lost by stopping after the factorising or by not testing which point is which.
