The exam
How Aitchison Admission Assessment Works
Aitchison College admits boys at several entry points across its Junior, Prep and Senior Schools. The College says its largest intakes are at K2 and E2 (Grade 7). Admission is competitive: candidates sit admission tests, are interviewed, and the final decision rests with the College.
The College publishes an admissions testing schedule and a Guide to Syllabus for English and Mathematics testing each cycle, and applies its age criteria strictly. It does not share test papers or discuss individual results.
Roots Home Tutors is not affiliated with Aitchison College and cannot influence admission. What we offer is careful academic preparation: making sure a child is confident with the English and Mathematics expected at his age and entry level, and calm in a test setting.

Entry class
Understanding the Entry Class
What a child needs depends entirely on where he is entering. A K2 applicant is a young child: preparation should feel like structured, playful learning. An E2 applicant is entering Grade 7 and needs secure Grade 6-level English and Mathematics. Senior entry is different again.
Before tutoring starts, we confirm the entry class, the child’s date of birth against the College’s published age criteria, and what the College’s current Guide to Syllabus says for that level.
| Entry point | Preparation emphasis |
|---|---|
| K2 | Early reading, letter and word skills, numbers, listening and following instructions |
| K3–K6 | Reading fluency, written English, arithmetic and problem-solving at grade level |
| E2 (Grade 7) | Comprehension, composition, grammar; Grade 6-level Mathematics and reasoning |
| M1, M2, C1, H1 | Level-specific English and Mathematics, per the College’s current guidance |
English
English Preparation
For younger children, English preparation means reading regularly, building vocabulary, writing neat, complete sentences and understanding what a question asks. Tutors use stories, picture prompts and short passages rather than heavy worksheets.
For E2 and older applicants, the focus moves to comprehension (finding information, inference, vocabulary in context), grammar and punctuation, and short, well-organised written answers.
- Daily reading habit
- Vocabulary and spelling
- Grammar in context
- Short compositions with feedback
Mathematics
Mathematics Preparation
Good preparation builds number sense, not tricks. Younger children work on counting, place value, simple operations and patterns with objects and games. Older applicants practise arithmetic accuracy, fractions and measurement, and multi-step word problems.
Tutors pay attention to how a child thinks through a problem, so he can handle a question he hasn’t seen before.
Age-appropriate
Age-Appropriate Academic Preparation
Pressure is the enemy of young test-takers. Short, regular sessions with plenty of encouragement work better than long cramming hours, especially at K2. Tutors watch for fatigue and keep lessons varied.
Where the College includes an interview, it is part of its own process. We do not coach scripted answers; tutors simply help children feel comfortable speaking with an adult, listening carefully and answering in their own words.
