In 9702 the same few habits cost marks in each paper. Here they are by paper, with the fix.

Paper 3 is a timed practical exam and Paper 5 is a written planning, analysis and evaluation paper. Home lessons do not replace the school laboratory for Paper 3, but a tutor can train the skills the marks depend on with a ruler, a stopwatch and past tasks.

• Measurement tables with consistent units and decimal places.
• Repeated readings and the mean value.
• Percentage and absolute uncertainty, including combining them for a calculated result.
• Graph plotting, a best-fit line and the gradient from a large triangle.
• Writing a plan that names the variables, the apparatus and the way the results will be analysed.

For example, a wire diameter measured as 0.32 ± 0.01 mm has a percentage uncertainty of about 3%, and because the cross-sectional area depends on the diameter squared, the area carries about 6%. Seeing this once on paper removes a common source of lost marks.

We work from topical questions to full timed papers, marking every answer against the Cambridge mark scheme and keeping an error log. The hardest A2 topics get their own block: capacitor discharge, magnetic fields and electromagnetic induction, and quantum physics.

A worked example from Paper 4: capacitor discharge

A 220 μF capacitor charged to 12 V discharges through a 47 kΩ resistor. Find the potential difference across it after 10 s, and the energy first stored.

The time constant is RC = 47 000 × 220 × 10⁻⁶ = 10.3 s. Using V = V₀ e^(−t/RC), V = 12 × e^(−10/10.3) = 12 × 0.380 = 4.6 V. The energy stored at the start is ½CV² = 0.5 × 220 × 10⁻⁶ × 12² = 0.016 J. The classic losses are leaving the capacitance in microfarads and forgetting that V decays but the energy falls as the square.

What is the difference between AS and A2 Physics?

AS is Papers 1 to 3 and covers the first half of the syllabus. A2 adds Papers 4 and 5 and the second half, and assumes the AS content.

My child finds A2 much harder than AS. Why?
