AS or A2: Choosing Your Paper Combination

AS Mathematics is Paper 1 plus one other paper. The full A Level is Papers 1 and 3 plus either Mechanics with Statistics 1, or Statistics 1 with Statistics 2. Your school decides the entry, and the route you pick changes what you study.

QualificationPapersWhat it coversCounts towards A Level?
AS, Pure onlyPaper 1 and Paper 2Pure Mathematics onlyNo
AS, Pure and MechanicsPaper 1 and Paper 4Pure plus MechanicsYes
AS, Pure and StatisticsPaper 1 and Paper 5Pure plus Statistics 1Yes
A Level, Mechanics routePapers 1, 3, 4 and 5Pure, Mechanics and Statistics 1Full A Level
A Level, Statistics routePapers 1, 3, 5 and 6Pure, Statistics 1 and Statistics 2Full A Level

Two rules to remember: Paper 4 and Paper 6 cannot be combined, and Paper 2 and Paper 3 cannot be taken in the same series. The Pure-only AS route (Papers 1 and 2) does not count towards the A Level.

Mechanics or Statistics: which route suits your child?

Students aiming at engineering or physics often take the Mechanics route because it builds on forces, motion and energy. Students heading to economics, computer science, medicine or data subjects often take the Statistics route. Check the entry requirements of the courses your child is considering before the school makes the entry.

Topics Our Tutors Cover

Tutors teach the topics of the papers your child sits. We start with the strands your recent papers show as weakest.

Pure Mathematics (Paper 1 and Paper 3)

AS: Paper 1 (and Paper 2)A2: Paper 3 adds
Quadratics and functionsAlgebra: modulus, partial fractions, polynomial division
Coordinate geometry and circular measureLogarithmic and exponential functions
TrigonometryTrigonometric identities and the R-form
Series: binomial expansion, arithmetic and geometric seriesSeries: binomial expansion for any index
DifferentiationParametric and implicit differentiation
IntegrationIntegration by parts and by substitution
Vectors in two and three dimensionsNumerical solution of equations by iteration
Differential equations and complex numbers

Mechanics (Paper 4)

Forces and equilibrium, kinematics of motion in a straight line, Newton’s laws of motion including connected particles, momentum, and work, energy and power.

Probability and Statistics (Paper 5 and Paper 6)

Statistics 1 covers the representation of data, permutations and combinations, probability, discrete random variables (including the binomial and geometric distributions) and the normal distribution. Statistics 2 adds the Poisson distribution, linear combinations of random variables, continuous random variables, sampling and estimation, and hypothesis tests.

Where Students Lose Marks in A Level Maths

These are the mistakes we see most often, and what a tutor does about each one.

Where marks goWhat usually causes itThe fix
Integration by partsWrong choice of u, a missing constant factor, no constant of integrationChoose u by a fixed rule, then differentiate the answer to check it
“Show that” questionsSkipping a step the examiner needs to seeWrite every line of algebra and finish on the exact target
Mechanics diagramsA missing force or friction in the wrong directionAlways draw the forces, resolve in two directions and name the equation used
Normal distributionNot standardising, or forgetting a continuity correction when approximating a discrete distributionDefine X, sketch the curve and write the z-value before reading the table
Trigonometric equationsMissing solutions within the rangeSketch the graph and list every solution in the interval
Time on a 75-mark paperSpending too long on early questionsTimed topical sets, then full timed papers

How We Teach: Past Papers and Mark Schemes

We teach from topical questions first, then full timed papers, and we mark every answer against the Cambridge mark scheme so your child sees exactly where method marks and accuracy marks are won. Targets are set from past grade thresholds and your child’s own results.

A worked example: integration by parts

Find the integral of x e^(2x) with respect to x. Let u = x and dv = e^(2x) dx, so du = dx and v = e^(2x)/2. Then the integral is x e^(2x)/2 minus the integral of e^(2x)/2 dx, which gives (x/2) e^(2x) minus (1/4) e^(2x) plus a constant. The two usual losses are forgetting the factor 1/2 when integrating e^(2x), and leaving out the constant.

A worked example: the normal distribution

X follows a normal distribution with mean 50 and standard deviation 8. Find P(X > 62). Standardise: z = (62 minus 50) divided by 8 = 1.5. From the table, P(Z < 1.5) = 0.9332, so P(X > 62) = 1 minus 0.9332 = 0.0668. A tutor insists on the sketch and the written z-value, because those are where method marks are awarded.

Male and Female A Level Maths Tutors

Families can choose a male or female teacher for 9709. Whoever is proposed has had their identity, degree and teaching approach checked first, and we tell you their availability and fee up front. Useful questions to put to any proposed tutor:

  • Which of Papers 1 to 6 have you actually taught?
  • Will you mark my child’s answers using the Cambridge mark scheme?
  • What will you show me after two weeks to prove progress?
  • Can you reach our street on the evenings we need?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which papers do I sit for AS and for A Level Maths?

AS is Paper 1 plus one of Papers 2, 4 or 5. The full A Level is Papers 1 and 3 with Papers 4 and 5, or Papers 5 and 6. Your school confirms the entry; we teach to it.

Is Paper 3 the hardest paper?

Many students find it the hardest because it adds integration techniques, differential equations and complex numbers on top of Paper 1. A tutor rebuilds the Paper 1 base first and then practises the A2 techniques.

Should my child choose Mechanics or Statistics?

Mechanics suits engineering and physics routes, and Statistics suits economics, computer science and data routes. Check the university requirements first, and see the route table above.

Does the Pure-only AS count towards the A Level?

No. The AS route of Papers 1 and 2 does not count towards the A Level. The AS routes with Paper 4 or Paper 5 do.

Can a tutor help me move from O Level to AS Maths?

Yes. The first lessons close gaps in algebra and trigonometry that O Level students often carry into AS.

Do you teach Further Mathematics 9231?

You can request it. Availability depends on the tutor, so we confirm before the trial.

How much does an A Level Maths home tutor cost in Lahore?

PKR 25,000 to 27,000 per subject per month, agreed with you before paid lessons start; the table above shows two-subject totals.

Can I request a female A Level Maths tutor?

Yes. Say so when you enquire, with your area and preferred times, and we look at female tutors who can come to you.

How do I start the Free 2-Day Trial?

Send the paper combination, whether it is AS or A2, your area and the times that suit. We propose a tutor and set up two free lessons so you can judge the teaching before paying.

Is this page different from your general Maths page?

Yes. This page is for Cambridge 9709 only. The general Maths page covers every level.
