The exam

What Is the NUST NET?

The NUST Entry Test (NET) is the National University of Sciences and Technology’s own admission test for undergraduate programmes. It is the largest part of the admission aggregate: in NUST’s published formula, the NET counts for 75%, with FSc/HSSC marks at 15% and Matric/SSC at 10%. A strong NET score can therefore make up for an average board result, and a weak one is hard to recover from.

NUST runs the NET in several series during each admission cycle, so students can choose when to sit, and in recent cycles has allowed more than one attempt with the best score counted. The test is multiple-choice and taken on computer at NUST-designated centres. Roots does not conduct the NET; we prepare students for it, at home in Lahore.

The test is set at HSSC level, but it is not a board exam. Questions are short, time is tight and the skill being tested is quick, accurate reasoning, not long written answers. That difference is why many students with good FSc or A Level marks still need focused NET preparation.

Roots provides private preparation tutoring in Lahore. We are not affiliated with the examining body and do not conduct the official test.

Who it’s for

Who Our NET Tutors Help

  1. FSc Pre-Engineering students

Moving from long board answers to fast MCQs, with Mathematics as the main focus.

  2. A Level students

Filling HSSC-syllabus gaps that A Level Maths and Physics may not cover in the same depth.

  3. ICS and Computing applicants

Preparing for the Computing route, where Mathematics carries the most weight.

  4. Repeat or late starters

Students who sat an earlier series, or who have only a few weeks, and need a tight, targeted plan.

What your tutor teaches

What Your NET Tutor Teaches

Preparation follows the subjects published for your NET category. For Engineering and Computing that means Mathematics first, then Physics and English.

  • Largest share

    Mathematics

The subject that decides most NET aggregates.

    • Functions, graphs and limits
    • Differentiation and integration
    • Trigonometry and analytic geometry
    • Vectors, matrices and sequences
    • Fast, accurate calculation
  • Engineering

    Physics

Concept checks and short numericals at HSSC level.

    • Mechanics and motion
    • Electricity and magnetism
    • Waves, optics and modern physics
    • Units, estimation and graphs
  • English

    Vocabulary and accuracy, answered quickly.

    • Vocabulary and word usage
    • Sentence correction
    • Reading comprehension
    • Grammar under time limits
  • By category

    Business & other categories

For NET Business & Social Sciences and other routes, we match a tutor to the subjects NUST lists for that category.

    • Quantitative and Mathematics sections
    • English and verbal reasoning
    • Category-specific subjects as published

By programme

NUST NET Preparation by Programme

NUST groups programmes into NET categories, and each category tests a different mix of subjects. Before the first lesson, we check which category your target programme falls under, because that decides where the hours go.

Engineering and Computing applicants spend most of their time on Mathematics, with Physics and English alongside. Business and Social Sciences applicants follow the subjects NUST publishes for that NET, usually with a stronger emphasis on quantitative and verbal skills. Applied Sciences, Architecture and other routes have their own published requirements.

Weightings and subjects can change between admission cycles. We plan from NUST’s current published guidance, not from last year’s notes, and recheck it when a new cycle opens.

Mathematics

NET Mathematics: Concepts, Speed and Accuracy

Most NET aggregates are won or lost in Mathematics. Students rarely fail here because they have never seen a topic. They lose marks because they solve too slowly, make sign or arithmetic slips, or meet a question set in an unfamiliar way.

Your tutor rebuilds the concept first, then trains the shortcuts that are safe to use: recognising question types, eliminating options, estimating answers and checking units. Timed sets start short and grow until the student can hold accuracy across a full section.

  • Concept recap before drill
  • Question-type recognition
  • Option elimination and estimation
  • Error log of repeated mistakes
  • Timed sets that build stamina

Science and English

Physics, English and Other Required Subjects

NET Physics rewards clear concepts and quick numericals rather than long derivations. Your tutor focuses on the chapters that appear most often in HSSC-level questions, the formulas worth knowing cold, and reading graphs and units without hesitation.

English is often left to the last week, which costs easy marks. A short, regular English slot on vocabulary, sentence correction and comprehension usually lifts the overall score with far less effort than another hour of Mathematics.

For other NET categories, the tutor follows the subject list NUST publishes for your programme.

FSc students

NET Preparation for FSc Students

FSc gives the right syllabus but the wrong habits for the NET. Board papers reward complete written solutions; the NET rewards picking the correct option quickly. Students used to writing every step often run out of time.

We use the FSc syllabus as the base, then switch the practice style: shorter questions, timed sets and regular review of mistakes. Many students prepare for the NET while finishing Part II, so the plan is built around board exams rather than against them.

What changes from FSc to NET

  • Long answers → single correct option
  • Unlimited working → strict time per question
  • Textbook exercises → mixed, unfamiliar questions
  • Memorised derivations → applied reasoning

A Level students

NET Preparation for A Level Students

A Level students often have strong reasoning but may meet HSSC topics that their A Level course treated differently or not at all. The gap depends on the subjects and syllabus taken, so we do not assume every A Level student needs the same plan.

Your tutor starts with a diagnostic against the HSSC-level content NUST tests, then fills only the gaps that matter, alongside timed NET-style practice. A Level students should also check how NUST treats their equivalence (IBCC) and whether an SAT-based route is available for their programme.

Example plan

An Example 8-Week NET Preparation Plan

A typical structure for a student with about two months. Your tutor adapts it to your category, starting level and test series.

  1. Week 1

    Diagnostic review

Timed diagnostic in each subject; topics ranked by marks at stake.

  2. Weeks 2–4

    Topic revision

Weak Mathematics topics first, Physics alongside, short English slots.

  3. Weeks 5–6

    Timed exercises

Mixed sets under time limits; error log reviewed every session.

  4. Week 7

    Mock analysis

    Full-length mocks with question-by-question review.

  5. Week 8

    Final revision

Formula sheets, repeated-mistake drills and test-day pacing.

This is an example, not a fixed package. Students with more time get a longer foundation phase; late starters get a shorter, more targeted one.

Tutor matching

Choosing the Right NET Tutor

We match NET tutors by subject strength, experience teaching entry-test students, your area and your timings. Male and female tutors are available on request, subject to availability for the subject and time you need.

Before regular sessions, you can discuss the plan with the tutor and use the first two sessions as a free trial for eligible placements. Progress is reviewed with the student and parents as mocks come in, and the plan is adjusted when it needs to be.

Discuss before choosing a tutor

  • Your NET category and target programme
  • Current FSc or A Level marks
  • Which series you plan to sit
  • Weakest subject and topics
  • Sessions per week you can manage
  • Preferred tutor gender
