The exam
What Is the MDCAT?
The Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) is the entry test for MBBS and BDS admission in Pakistan. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) sets the curriculum and rules, and designated universities conduct the test.
Under the published 2026 framework, the paper has 180 multiple-choice questions: Biology 81, Chemistry 45, Physics 36, English 9 and Logical Reasoning 9, with no negative marking. Biology alone is 45% of the paper, so it shapes most preparation plans.
The syllabus follows the HSSC curriculum in a defined form, but MDCAT questions are faster and more conceptual than board questions. Roots provides preparation tutoring in Lahore; we do not issue PMDC material or claim access to any official question bank.

Biology
MDCAT Biology Preparation
With 81 of 180 questions, Biology is where most of the score is decided. MDCAT Biology questions often turn on a single detail (a structure, an enzyme, a sequence), so students who read the textbook once lose marks to near-miss options.
Tutors teach chapter by chapter against the PMDC syllabus, use diagrams and flow charts to fix sequences in memory, and set short MCQ sets after every topic so recall is tested, not just reread.
- Syllabus-mapped chapter plan
- Diagrams, sequences and comparisons
- Topic MCQs after each lesson
- Spaced revision of high-weight chapters
Chemistry and Physics
MDCAT Chemistry and Physics Preparation
Chemistry combines concepts with quick calculation: mole problems, equilibrium and organic reactions are common sticking points. Tutors teach the reaction patterns and shortcuts that make organic chemistry manageable, and drill the calculations until they are routine.
Physics carries fewer questions but causes the most anxiety. MDCAT Physics rewards clear concepts and short numericals; tutors focus on formulas worth knowing cold, units and graph reading, rather than long derivations.
English and reasoning
English and Logical Reasoning
English and Logical Reasoning are only nine questions each, but they are the easiest marks to secure with a little regular practice. A short weekly slot on vocabulary, grammar and reasoning patterns protects these 18 marks without taking time away from Biology.
Strategy
MCQ-Solving Strategy and Weak-Area Improvement
With no negative marking, every question should be answered. Tutors teach students to read the stem carefully, eliminate clearly wrong options, recognise distractors built on common misconceptions, and manage time so no section is rushed.
Progress is tracked by subject and chapter. Mock results are broken down so the next week’s sessions target the chapters losing the most marks, rather than re-teaching what the student already knows.
Preparation options
- Full MDCAT preparation: all subjects, mocks and review
- Biology-only coaching: the highest-weight subject
- Chemistry-only coaching: concepts and calculations
- Physics-only coaching: concepts and numericals
- Intensive revision: the final weeks before the test
With FSc
MDCAT Preparation Alongside FSc Revision
Most students prepare for the MDCAT while finishing FSc Part II. The two overlap heavily, which helps, but they reward different skills: board papers want complete written answers, the MDCAT wants quick, accurate choices.
Tutors plan the year in two phases: syllabus-led teaching that supports both exams before the boards, then MDCAT-only timed practice and mocks after the board exams, when the focus switches completely to the entry test.
Example plan
An Example MDCAT Preparation Schedule
A typical shape for the months after the FSc board exams. Students starting earlier spend longer on syllabus teaching.
- Week 1
Diagnostic
Subject-wise test to find the weakest chapters.
- Weeks 2–5
Syllabus pass
Biology every week; Chemistry and Physics in rotation.
- Weeks 6–8
Topic MCQs
Timed chapter sets with mistake review.
- Weeks 9–10
Full mocks
180-question mocks with subject-wise analysis.
- Final weeks
Revision
High-weight chapters, repeated mistakes and pacing.
An example only. Your tutor sets the plan after a diagnostic and adjusts it as mock results come in.
Ways to prepare
MDCAT Preparation Options
Full MDCAT preparation
All subjects with a complete plan and mocks.
Biology-only coaching
Depth in the subject with the most questions.
Chemistry or Physics only
For students losing marks in one science.
Intensive revision
High-frequency sessions in the final weeks.
Tutor matching
Male and Female Subject-Specialist Matching
Where possible, we match a specialist for each subject: a Biology tutor for Biology, a Chemistry tutor for Chemistry. Some students prefer one tutor for all sciences; we can arrange either. Male and female tutors are available on request, subject to availability.
You can discuss the plan with each tutor first, and use the first two sessions as a free trial for eligible placements. Mock results are reviewed with the student and parents, and the plan is adjusted subject by subject.
Discuss before choosing a tutor
- FSc or A Level background
- Board result or predicted marks
- Weakest subject and chapters
- Target test cycle
- One tutor or subject specialists
- Preferred tutor gender and timings
